Added Charges on Bad Credit Auto Loans

Many who take out bad credit auto loans get a nasty surprise when they start receiving the car payments. The car payments are often much higher than what the car salesman and the loan officer quoted them.

One of the main reasons why the car payments can be much higher than what a person was promised was because of added charges. Many loan companies will tack added all sorts of added charges onto bad credit auto loans. Unfortunately these charges may not show up until the actual auto loan contract is generated.

A good example of such an added charge is insurance to cover the risk of lending to a person without a credit check. This can be added to the loan in some states if it is legal. There are also handling fees and charges for the bank.

A major charge on bad credit auto loans from dealers is late fees. Car dealers still have the power to charge excessive late fees on auto loans. This means they could increase the interest or add a penalty to a car payment if the payment was a day late.

Quite a few people will think they are safe from these added fees because Congress banned the use of most of them by credit card companies and other consumer lenders. Unfortunately, Congress specifically exempted car dealers from this legislation so many of the new consumer protections don’t exist at the car lot.

The best way to avoid excessive fees on bad credit auto loans is to ask to see the loan agreement and read it before you sign it. Even if you’re dealing with an online lender you can have them e-mail you the contract. Often times you should be able to spot added fees in the contract by reading it.

If you do spot something you don’t like in the contract ask the dealer if it can be removed. In many cases, a dealer will change a loan agreement in order to make a sale.
